This is also a seafood restaurant owned by the same people as in my previous posting.

This location is at 304 Kennedy Blvd. In Pittston, Pa.

As with the Scranton Cooper's this location also has excellent food and a great atmosphere. This location has a model train that runs continously throughout the place which adds a unique touch.

This location also doesn't take reservations, it's first come first serve. Don't forget to visit on your birthday for a free dinner with the purchase of an additional entree. This location features a cozy pub, The Forest Riverview Room, and the Cabana.

Cooper's Seafood House

As you can see in the second photo here this is a very unique restaurant. This is a great place for seafood in Scranton and worth the trip to enjoy.

Reservations are not accepted here, it's first come first serve and it is very popular so expect a bit of a wait. Usually the wait isn't very long though.

This place has been mentioned several times on NBC's hit show, "The Office". Cooper's is consistantly rated in the top 100 independently owned restaurants in the U.S. and voted Restaurant of the year by the Pennsylvania Restaurant Association.

On your birthday you can get a free dinner with the purchase of an additional entree.

It is located @ 701 N. Washington Ave. in Scranton and the phone number is 570-346-6883.

If you visit this restaurant you will not be disappointed because the food is very good and the atmosphere is great.

They also offer catering for any occasion @ 570-346-7049.

Autumn In N.E. Pennsylvania

Autumn is a very popular time of the year in Pennsylvania for obvious reasons. Here in the Northeast part of this state it is the peak time for all the colors seen in these photos. If you go further south of here the peak season won't be for a couple more weeks so if you can't come here for a couple more weeks you will still have plenty of colors to see but not much longer than that. In my opinion it is well worth the trip to see the fall foliage. Living here I have taken for granted how cool the trees look until I went to take these photos. As with anything in nature, no two areas are the same so no matter where you go to see the foliage it will be different at each location.

Inclined Plane

This is pretty far from Northeastern Pennsylvania but I did mention that I would include things and places outside of Northeastern Pa.

This is the worlds steepest Inclined Plane with a grade of 70.9%.
It transports cars and passengers to an elevation of 1693 feet.

It is located in Johnstown, Pa. which is in Western Pennsylvania. If you plan on visiting this area of Pennsylvania it is worth stopping to see because of the amazing view seen in these photos There is a observation platform, a visitors center, gift shop, and the City View Bar & Grill.

Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area

These waterfalls are located on route 209 not far from Bushkill Falls but unlike Bushkill Falls these areas are free to explore. These locations are also very popular and there are several other waterfall locations along route 209. There are no restuarants or stores at these locations but they are fairly close to restuarants and stores. There are campgrounds and hotels nearby also.

Although the scenery is beautiful in these photos it is nothing compared to being there in person so it is worth the trip to check them out.

Bushkill Falls

This is called the "Niagara Falls of Pennsylvania". There are 8 waterfalls here and the highest of these falls is the Main Falls which is 100 feet high. As you can see from the photos here there are walkways throughout this place which makes it a lot easier to navigate around the different falls. There are a couple of areas where you can hike natural trails if you are into hiking the natural way.

This really is an amazing place to see for all the scenery it has to offer. The man-made walkways seen here are pretty amazing also. They are traversing the creek below or are mounted on the sides of the many cliff walls.

Besides the waterfalls there is the Pennsylvania Wildlife Exhibit, Native American Exhibit. You can fish Twin Lakes, take a Paddle boat ride, or play a round of miniature golf and there is a playground area for the kids. You can visit a variety of gift shops and of course, souvenir shops.

There is a snack bar for beverages, pizza or burgers. There is also ice cream available and the Fudge Kitchen located in the Wagon Wheel Pavilion. If you prefer you can bring your own food. They have plenty of picnic areas with charcoal grills, picnic tables and covered pavilions with picnic tables.

There is a fee to enter the falls area which in my opinion is well worth the cost. The whole family will enjoy this place. This is a very popular place and if you visit this location you will find out why it is so popular

Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs

Mohegan sun was the first Casino to open in Pennsylvania and I didn't post it on my site until now because the photos here were not part of the original casino. Originally the casino was operated from the old Pocono Downs Harness Racing building. There are still gaming machines in that building but the majority are now in the new building shown here.

This Casino is located at 1280 Highway 315 in Wilkes Barre, Pa.

This Casino features 2500 Gaming Machines, 32 Table and Poker Games, and several retuarants and bars, and they still have Harness Racing. There is also a hotel on the property, The Shops at Mohegan Sun which has 130,000 square foot retail area, 20,000 square foot world class spa, and a 10,000 square foot indoor pool.

Unfortunatley you are not allowed to take photos of the inside of the Casino so that is why there are none shown here.

This is really a unique Casino and I think anyone visiting the area, or are from the area will want to stop and check this place out.

Hillside Farms

100 acres of land was purchased by a coal broker named William L. Conyngham back when coal was in it's heyday in this area. He bought this land and hosted many events for society's elite. It was once the home of award-winning Clydesdale and Belgian Draft Horses as well as the best cattle available such as Holstein's.

There are many events planned here for the kids and the rest of the family. One of the events coming up soon is what they call, "Movies on the Lawn". You bring your own seating or blankets and enjoy a free movie out under the stars. This is a great event for the whole family and starts at sunset. Refreshments are available for purchase. There are many other events planned so if interested in what they have to offer call 570-696-2881.

The real reason I've included this dairy on my site is because of the great dairy products available here. Their milk is what I consider the best in the area as well as the ice cream. They serve ice cream in cones, by the cup, sundaes, or ice cream to go. If you buy ice cream from the ice cream bar you can either sit inside the air conditioned store and enjoy it or go outside and sit under a huge tree where there are tables and chairs. I prefer to walk around and enjoy some of the scenery which are in the photos here.

This place is located at 65 Hillside Road in Shavertown, Pa. Take Route 309 (Cross Valley Expressway) towards Dallas, Pa. and make a left at the first light you come to and it is about 1 mile on the right. This place is worth the drive.

Pocono Snake and Animal Farm

This little zoo features over 100 animals, including a Siberian Tiger, A Giant Anaconda, some Alligators and many other exotic animals. It may not look like much from the outside but you will be surprised how much bigger it is on the inside.

Children can feed many of the animals so you know they will love this place.

It is located on Route 209 in Marshalls Creek, Pa. about 2 miles from I-80. Just take exit 309 (Marshalls Creek) for Approximately 2 miles.

This company offers river trips Through the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area located in the Pocono Mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania.

They offer many different unguided river trips which vary in distance from 2 hours to overnight camping trips. You can camp, fish, or swim on islands along the river. If you have never taken a river rafting trip you really should try it because it is great. If you have tried river rafting then you know how much fun they are. The whole family will love this adventure. This is a great vacation trip that is fairly inexpensive. Consider this as a stop even if just for a weekend getaway because it is great fun, and very scenic.

This is another location shoppers may be interested in located at 1000 Route 611, Tannersville, Pa.
This shopping center is fairly close to many areas of Pa. and other states. Frances Slocum State Park

This Park is named for Frances Slocum, who as a young girl was kidnapped by American Indians. She was only five years old when she was kidnapped. As the American Indians moved westward they took her with them and she spent the rest of her life with them. These Indians settled in Indiana and 59 years after her abduction she was located on a reservation near Peru, Indiana. She died in 1847 at the age of 74. There is a recreational area in Indiana called the Frances Slocum State Recreational Area and Lost Sister Trail.

The Park here in Pa. offers Swimming, Fishing, Boating(electric motors only), Picnicking, Hunting(in authorized areas), Trail Biking, Hiking, Ice Fishing, Ice Skating, Sledding and Tobogganing.

There is a 100-Site campground, with 15 walk-in tent sites and 85 tent or trailer sites. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. There are showers, drinking water, and sanitary dump stations available and many sites have electric hookup. This park is 1,035 acres and Frances Slocum Lake is 165 acres.

There is access for people with disabilities.

The park is located 5 miles from Dallas, Pa. and 10 miles from Wilkes Barre, Pa. There is shopping and many other activities nearby.

Shoppes at Montage

For the shoppers in the area or for anyone visiting the area I decided to include this shopping center because there are more stores here than a lot of the malls out there. It is located just off of I-81 in Moosic, Pa. If you are heading north on I-81 take exit 182 (Davis Street). If heading south on I-81 take exit 182-A (Davis Street). The address is 1035 Shoppes Blvd. For those of you not familiar with this area it is just south of Downtown Scranton. For more detailed directions or other information call 570-341-3271.

Knoebels Amusement Resort

I've included this amusement park on my site because it is a great place to visit for the entire family. It is located on PA 487 between Elysburg & Catawissa.

The great thing about this park is that admission is free, parking is free, free picnic facilities, and free entertainment. The food is good and reasonably priced. In fact it was voted best amusement park food in the world.

One of the wooden roller coasters, called the Phoenix, was voted third best wooden coaster in the world shown in the first photo. The second photo is the Twister and it is a great wooden coaster also.

The third photo shows only a small portion of the park due to the fact that there are many trees within the park. Lots of places to get out of the sun which makes those sweltering days a little more bearable.

One entire corner of the park is rides for the kids and there are plenty for them to enjoy. They will love this place. There is also a kiddie pool for them located near the water rides.

Nearby is Knoebles Three Ponds golf course and two campgrounds as well.

Eckley Miners' Village

This village is located in Weatherly, Pa.

It is open year round and there is a museum on-site which is open Monday through Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. It is closed certain holidays so be sure and call ahead. For information and driving directions call 570-636-2070.

This was one of hundreds of mining towns built in anthracite regions in Pennsylvania in the nineteenth century. In 1854 work began on the Council Ridge Colliery (colliery=a coal mine) and the Village of Eckley.

The mining company Sharpe, Leisenring and Company, later known as Sharpe, Weiss and Company leased this land to mine for coal. The mine owners provided housing for mine workers and their families. They also owned the stores, schools and churches. By owning the village it gave the mine owners greater control over their workers.

In 1870 the population of this village was over one thousand. Eventually strip mining replaced underground mining. Strip mining was done with steam shovels or drag lines shown in the first 2 photos here. You can see how big these machines were by the person standing next to it in the second photo. As you can tell they were just abandoned in many cases when no longer needed.

In 1971 this site was deeded to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and it is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. These towns were also known as "Patches". In most of the miners homes the outer boards of the house were the only protection from the outside. Crumpled newspaper stuffed between the studs was used as makeshift insulation. In most homes the floors were bare or covered with burlap bags.

In 1968 this Vllage was leased to Paramount Pictures to film the movie The Molly Macquires. The coal breaker seen in the center photo was actually built by Paramount Pictures in the late 60's. It is a replica of the original.

This is another very interesting place to visit for the history of anthracite in Pennsylvania and as far as I am aware it is the only miners village left in Pennsylvania.

Windmills

These windmills are part of the largest wind generation facility in Pennsylvania and is the second largest wind farm east of Mississippi.

There are 43 windmills here on Moosic Mountain in Waymart, Pa. on Route 6. The energy generated from these windmills is used wherever the closest demand exists.

The 43 windmills here generate enough energy to power 15,000 to 19,000 homes. They are massive with a height of 329 feet and the length of the blades is 111 feet.

Pennsylvania produces more megawatts by windmill than any state east of the Mississippi. More than half of the wind turbines in Pennsylvania are in the northeast region of the state.

This farm is located Northeast of Scranton. There is also a wind farm just southeast of Wilkes Barre, Pa. in Bear Creek with 13 windmills and there are 2 windmills in the Humboldt Industrial Park loacated in Hazleton, Pa.

Roebling's Delaware Aqueduct

(Aqueduct=An artificial channel or canal for conducting water from one place to another). This aqueduct is also located in Lackawaxen Pennsylvania less than a quarter mile from the Zane Grey Museum.

Now known as the Roebling bridge this is the oldest wire suspension bridge in the U.S. Begun in 1847 as one of 4 suspension aqueducts on the Delaware and Hudson Canal. It was designed and it's construction was supervised by John A. Roebling, who was also the engineer of the Brooklyn Bridge, among many other bridges. This aqueduct was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1968, and is also designated a National Civil Engineering Landmark. This is part of the Delaware and Hudson (D&H) canal and gravity railroad system. It was used as a transportation system between the coal fields of Northeastern Pennsylvania and markets on the Hudson river.

This is only one of 4 suspension aqueducts designed by John Roebling for the D&H Canal. There was once a ferry that crossed the Delaware here and caused many problems with timber that was being floated down the Delaware to Trenton and Philadelphia. One problem is it was a major bottleneck and there were also collisions with timber rafts so this aqueduct and three others were built to alleviate this problem.

It operated for 50 years and then was converted to a private toll bridge between Pennsylvania and New York.

In 1980 the National Park Service purchased the aqueduct and preserved it as part of the Delaware Scenic and Recreational River. The protrusions on the upper side of the bridge are ice breakers. You can either walk or drive across the bridge.

All of these photos are taken on the Pennsylvania side of the aqueduct, the opposite side is New York.

Zane Grey Museum

This museum is located in Lackawaxen, Pa. alongside the Delaware River. For information on driving directions and operating hours call 570-685-4871.

Zane Grey was born on January 31, 1872 in Zanesville, Ohio. He recieved a scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania earning a degree in Dentistry in 1896. He had his own Dental practice in New York City. Later he left Dentistry to persue writing full-time. Most people know Zane Grey for his western novels but he also published many other articles and books. This museum was once Zane Grey and his wife's house. It is now owned and operated by the National Park Service. Just down the road is the Roebling Delaware Aqueduct which I will highlight in my next posting. This area is very scenic and it is located in the far Northeastern region of Pennsylvania. In fact if you cross the Delaware river you are in New York State.

Tunkannock Viaduct

This bridge is known locally as the Nicholson Bridge because it located in Nicholson, Pa. on Routes 11 and 92.

It was built from 1912 to 1915 as part of a major improvement to the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad. It is 2,375 feet long, 34 feet wide and 240 feet at it's highest point above Tunkhannock Creek.

At the time it was built it was the largest reinforced structure of it's kind and is the world's largest concrete railroad bridge.

Novelist Theodore Dreiser called this viaduct "One of the true wonders of the World."

To truly appreciate the size of this structure you really should see it other than in photographs.

The Famous Houdini Museum

This is the only building in the world devoted to the most famous magician of all time. There are guided tours of the fabulous collection in the 100 year old historic building, and the rarest film footage of Houdini doing escapes. They have a magic show which includes floating an audience member up in the air, passing a hoop around them, and float them back down. Featuring Dorothy Dietrich and Dick Brooks.

This is a very interesting museum for all ages.

Nay Aug Park

This is the David Wenzel tree house located in Nay Aug Park in Scranton, Pa. which overlooks a creek and waterfall seen in the adjoining photo. Nay Aug Park is Scranton's largest park. This park offers walking trails, picnic areas, kid-friendly rides, two olympic size swimming pools, and a waterslide-complex. They also have an animal sanctuary which is free for visitors to enjoy. They have some monkeys, a tiger, birds and other animals. Located in the park is the Everhart museum. Also there is the Holiday Light Show displayed every Christmas season.

This park is a great place to spend a day. Besides the tree house there is a walking trail which takes you down to the creek and waterfall.

Anthracite Model Railroad Society

This model railroad layout is located in Hazelton, Pa. at the AMRS building, 1057 Rear Peace St. (1057 Hanover Court). The phone # for information and directions is: 570-579-4866.

I especially like this layout because it represents the anthracite history in Pennsylvania and it also represents the steel industry. The whole family will enjoy both of the layouts that I have posted so you will want to include them while visiting this area of Pa. or even if you live in this area of Pa.

Hudson Model Railroad Club

Here are a few photos of the Model Railroad layout of the HMRC located in Hudson, Pa. It is in the Polish Club on Gibbon St., 2nd floor. I have always been fascinated by these layouts but especially when I was young. Still, as an adult, I enjoy seeing these layouts and I am amazed at the patience and time involved in these layouts, not to mention how much money it takes to set up a layout like this. Five Guys

I had to include this place as one of the food stops in the Scranton area.

Located just north of Scranton @ 735 Scranton/Carbondale Highway in Dickson City, Siniawa Plaza II. You can call them @570-941-0113 or Fax @570-941-0577.

Forget about all the fast food joints around because this one beats them all, hands down. They always have fresh ground beef (never frozen). Their burgers are grilled and juicy. All the following toppings are free, Mayo, relish, onions, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, ketchup, mustard, jalapeno peppers, green peppers, A-1 sauce, bar-b-q sauce, and hot sauce. It's up to you which suits your taste. Their fries are the best also. You can order them Five Guys style, or Cajun.

They also offer smaller burgers for the kids as well as hot dogs and grilled cheese. They also have peanuts to snack on while you wait for your order. The fries are cooked in pure peanut oil so if you are allergic to peanuts then this is not the place to visit.

For everyone else this is a great hamburger place and you will not be disappointed.

They have been voted #1 by many dining magazines and local radio stations.

The Hours are 11am -10pm, 7 days a week.

Rickett's Glen State Park

This Park is located

approximately 20 miles west of Wilkes Barre, Pa. on Pa route 118. The park is 13,050 acres and Lake Jean which is located in the park is 245 acres. There is hiking, camping, horseback riding, hunting, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, cross country skiing, and ice fishing.

There is the Glens Natural Area, called Falls Trail which has 24 waterfalls. The highest is 94 feet tall and is called Ganoga Falls. The creek that feeds these waterfalls is Kitchen Creek. Many of the trees in this park are 500 years old, and some fallen trees were discovered to be 900 years old.

This park is one of 21 chosen by the Pennsylvania Bureau of Parks for it's "twenty must-see Pennsylvania State Parks" list. This Park is a registered National Natural Landmark.

There are no hotels or shopping centers in the area so come prepared if you plan on an extended stay here. The nearest city is Wilkes Barre. For serious campers and outdoor people this is a great park because of all the activities available and the miles of trails to explore.
